Thanks Roger H, having the right tools and equipment is half the battle and access to the internet and forums with people providing great advice and experience.
Having an engineering maintenance background helps a lot as well, although over the last few years its been less hands on which is why I enjoy doing what I can on my TT..........and there’s always something to do!!!

Re: BB's TT (Sill Cover Replacement)

Post by BrianB » Tue Nov 07, 2017 4:30 pm

A few weeks ago I collected my new sill covers from Tanya at Heatons Bodyshop in Bamber Bridge and have been waiting for a suitable time to replace them, I wanted to do both at the same time and new that I would probably need several days over which to do it.
Just recently I had the opportunity to do this as I had taken some time off and didn’t want to rush it and given the age of the car wasn’t sure how easily some of the fasteners would be to remove and what I might find underneath once removed.
Following a comprehensive guide I found on the tt forum I have to say the removal process was reasonably straight forward the only real issue being that on each side one of the two fasteners behind the rear wheel arch liner was seized in the insert and I had to pull the insert through the skin in order to remove it which left me wondering how I was going to reinstall this fastener when fitting the new sill covers.
I found the hex inserts in the online parts catalogue and ordered them from TPS, I also ordered an insert tool from Amazon and found that when the pulled skin was dressed back to being flat that the inserts were a reasonable fit, so with the addition of a washer I was able to pull up the new inserts.
There was also some minor corrosion on the front and back of the sills that I treated and primed but overall for the age not that bad.

With the corrosion removed, treated and primed and the new inserts fitted I was able to start the installation of the new sill covers which was basically the reverse of the removal.
