i have a 2001 tt roadster, 89k, father in law owned it for last 6 years so never been hammered, i have owned it for 6 months now ( what a fantastic summer and to own 1st soft top...omg!) and still have to pinch myself sometimes, previous cars include austin princess ( in terry and june brown). fiat 127 gt, montego 1.6, etcc, i have had the use of a transit van and a zafira ( that i got chipped to 197bhp! ) for the last 8 yrs,so..... to have a petrol turbo 4wd 225 bhp convertible is quite awesome, however ,
I've lived with her for a few months now , bounced her off the rev limiter once by mistake 2nd day of owning her and blew a coil pack thingy,an exhaust blowing noise that initially i was unsure of as got quieter as engine warmed has got worse and under hard left hand cornering there is an intermittent rubbing type of noise that increases or decreases with speed.
I believe through others info and research that
A.... my manifold is cracked
B.... i may have a wheel bearing issue
C... a complete coil pack renewal is advisable.

my dilemmas are ( bearing in mind i love the originality of this German beast and that it was funded by an inheritance rather not received!)
> 2nd hand manifolds are like rocking horse droppings and those that are that i find appear cracked without guarantees and having prepared myself to pay £300 for a stainless steel one, have been advised that the welds can break off and ruin the turbo. and that its best to get a good 2nd hand one rather than a new one ( have not investigated cost of new original yet but assume it will be ouch!)
> i may want a small re map in the future but nothing stupid and would appreciate guidance on a strong reliable set of coilpacks that are up to the occasional leadfoot challenge....and dont cost the earth
> and does anyone reckon my bearing is on its way out as my mechanic reckons there is no play in wheel but was questioned by someone that said something about there being a double bearing??
i live in Tamworth and hope that the funds spent joining this club ( back issues of magazines have taken over Viz now as rest room literature!!) have been worth it, I'd love to do loads to this car but want it to be in fine health 1st b4 going to work..
thanking you in advance
I love my TT and I'm in construction and do not cut hair no matter what my jealous friends say, 46 and proud,
your response / responses eagerly awaited

Welcome along.

It's worth ringing your local Audi dealer with your VIN number to see if your TT qualifies for the coilpack recall. If it hasn't been done already (many haven't), you'll get the coilpacks replaced for free. Had mine done at Blackburn Audi, with a free health check (for the car, not me) and free coffee and biscuits while I waited. Definitely worth a phone call.
