New to the forum from Herts.. I have a passion for the Mk1 and this is my second go at owning one. I bought a very neglected Moro blue 2003 facelift, off a friend on mine who trades mostly in Mk1's. I knew what I was buying, so was prepared to spend a few quid to get it yo where I wanted it. The previous owner had sorted the brakes and discs, drilled all round, a stage 1 remap and a private plate. It is sitting on a decent set of tyres, which look almost new. Think that was the sum total of his work. Once I got it back home I started to list all the faults and they seemed to go on forever..usual dashpod pixel issue, no radio code, engine management light on, abs light on, strutt mount knackered on the off side, badly stone chipped, lack of engine covers, wrong unsecured battery, boy racer air induction, black painted wheels, headlamp glass fogged up, leather tired, no cd changer , think you get the idea.
Sent the dashpod off and found that the previous owner had taped over the airbag light, guessing to get it through an mot, Rather fool hardy way to address such a fault. The paint has numerous chips and small dents.
I have been working on the car pretty much since I took ownership. I purchased a set of original BBS alloys (just had them refurbed), sorted the cambelt waterpump, My autospark isolated the air bag fault to steering and seat, both now sorted and light off. Engine covers on, new thermostat and temp sensor. Haldex and full service. Previous owner also bodged the exhaust, deleted the centre box and removed the gubbings in the end box. The exhaust is rattling around blowing from a join.. However, he did fit a high flow cat. Car is going in for new fabricated exhaust on the 18th. I had the leather sorted and the interior is now spot on. I replaced the headlamps and strutt bush, so all good now.
I have a few classics so handy with a spanner and have quite a few contacts in different trades so able to keep the cost down to a minimum.
A mate of mine is giving me a corner of his paint shop in two weeks. I am going to prep the car and then fully respray it .
I love the car, great colour and it is incredibly quick. I plan to upgrade suspension and then take it on a few road and track trips.
It did come with history and supporting paperwork
Sorry for the long post, probably used it as a bit of therapy
