The story begins with a visit to a garage with second hand cars, together with my six year old daughter, to see whether she would fit in the back of a TT. That appeared easy. That was on Saturday. On Monday, me and my wife have a short test drive. Yes we want it. Make it ready. I"ll pick it up on Friday. Three months warranty with a max of £750.
Picked it up on Friday. Mmm, i'm not really happy with the way it drives slowly. A bit restless. Is it the brakes, is it the gearbox? Mmm, didn't notice it during the test drive. From Tuesday till Thursday I'm in the US, then in the Netherlands. Monday, the car goes to an audi specialist. At the end of the day, the diagnosis is that it is the mechatronic unit that is not working well. A well known fault. On Wednesday, that is yesterday, i visit the local audi dealer. Yes, it is probably the mechatronic unit. Can you miss it for three days. Okay it goes next monday till wednesday. Mmm. Not really happy.
Better: not completely happy. It drives fantastic. Except for the gearbox at low speed, it is much, much nicer to drive than the tiptronic porsche boxster s that I traded in. Additionally, I'm using it with the children Seb, 7, and Iris, 6. Yesterday we went to Fountain's Abbey, today we went to the beach. Can't do that in a Boxster.

So, monday it went into the audi garage and I was called on tuesday. Yeah, it is the mechatronic unit. To rectify this we have to order parts in Germany, which will take 7 to 10 days and this is gonna cost £2,300. And by the way, did you know that your front brakes are 90% worn and need replacement? That's another £300.
Mmmm. I have this warranty with a £750 limit. Let me start calling. Then, lots of calls take place up and down from me to the garage at which I bought the car. They want to see the car themselves. Then they don't. Then they do. Matters are not simplified by the fact that the garage that sold the car has a mother company which works on the cars and underwrites the warranty.

Additionally phone calls are made between the various garages. Audi puts the price down from £2,300 to £1,600. My garage is quite sure that the brakes cannot have been worn for 90%. Indeed the other garage where I had it for its first health check didn't pick up on it either. Is audi making this up, just to get some more business?

On Thursday, it is decided to give it all a go and have it all fixed. On Friday, the parts are ordered. Between 7 and 10 days, I've been told. I pay 25%. Maybe I should pay nothing but I am not in the mood for a route with lawyers.

I believe my garage that they didn't know this. The people they bought the car from probably did, or the person who sold the car.

But what about Audi? They quote me £2,300 and agree to £1,600. And what about those brakes? I'll have that checked for sure. Is this all allowed?

Two weeks later on Wednesday, I get the phone call that the car is ready. I'm in the Netherlands and can't do anything than call the sellers that they need to pay 75%. A strange stream of telephone calls starts indicating that no money is being transferred. According to Audi, because the seller doesn't pay, according to the seller, because he doesn't have a bill. This is all happening on Thursday and Friday while I'm in London and can't do anything. Friday at five, the seller tells me that he finally has received a bill, but that Audi can't check whether he has paid or not. The only way to get my car before Monday is if I pay the complete figure. So, it's either ride on Monday and hope that the seller will pay or its is to wait till Monday, sit until he has paid and pick it up then. I decide to pay. We'll see whether this is the right decision.

The car drives brilliantly. It is a delight, but it does bring a rather nasty taste in my mouth of people trying to cheat. Maybe I should sell it. But the children love it. My wife doesn't trust it as much anymore. We'll see.
