Progress update... with the car being a bit of an unknown, I took it to the local Audi dealership for a vehicle inspection. There were quite a lot of jobs needing doing but they price matched a local independent, so the car has now had a new drop link, driveshaft and CV joint, cam belt, waterpump and brake fluid. I’ve bought VCDS and cleared the old fault codes and all is now running well.

This weekend’s task was to fit an original air box and filter as I wasn’t happy with the aftermarket version fitted by a previous owner. Having ordered the air box I was hopeful the secondary air pump and lines were still installed and fortunately they were, so these were connected up. At the same time I fitted a new battery as the car had been struggling to hold charge. The difference in the performance and sound of the car is amazing - so much better now! I just need to find the fuse box holder and front piece of the battery box and then can fit the top cover to complete the restoration to original.

Progress update:

So I've had chance to do a few more jobs that have required sorting for a while. I've now replaced the passenger door card which had a large piece missing at the top, replaced the window switch on the drivers side, repaired the rear storage tray and also the dipstick guide tube - that last job being by far the worst as the old tube was broken in several places. The best tip I found for removing this was to heat the tube before removal using a hair dryer, and this worked really well for me. I've also added the missing trim from the battery tray and cover so now have an 'original' looking engine bay.

Having stored the car outside in the recent wet weather (or very very wet to be precise) I realised the car was getting wet floors. After investigation this turned out to be blocked and disconnected drip tray tubes. Although I've not had much time of late, yesterday I finally got the opportunity to replace the tubes (the car has been garaged now for about a week and has dried out nicely). I was slightly surprised when I pulled out what looks to be washing machine hosing (see photo) - anyone know if this is what the original Audi part looked like or if this is a 'creative' alternative?

One piece of advice if you have to do yours at any time - buy a borescope! I bought mine for under £5 on eBay. It connects directly to my phone but made an easy job of locating the tube and the drip tray. The photos looking down the new tube were taken using it. Great bit of kit.

Now on to curing the sump plug leak.
