Granddaughters (6&9) came to see us yesterday, they liked the look of Grandad’s new toy! They both (individually of course) screamed “Grandad how fast are we going?”, no answer from myself, concentrating on getting round the road! Stepson was also impressed, he didn’t realise he’d been hyperventilating!
Even though I’ve limited myself to 5K revs, while I’m getting used to it and whilst waiting for cambelt replacement (being done next week whilst away on hols) what an amazing machine!!!
Sooooo much torque and power, but without the nervous tail happy Westfield memories.
Done couple of local trips now, really enjoy this little pocket rocket!!
Took a few attempts to get tonneau on correctly, diagrams confused me slightly, but now I’ve got it, really like the lines.
Initial clean of engine bay covers helps the under bonnet look. Thoughts are to keep it as it, as an example of stock machine, from the outside.

Posted update on Oils in TT Arena, just to say that the performance of car after routine service is really sharp now, well impressed! Moving on to service brakes at all corners, couldn’t figure out why N/S/F wheel was difficult to refit. Brake disc securing screw been sheared off!!! Much careful drilling later, temp screw fitted to enable easier wheel refitting. Removed front wheel arch liners cleaned out muck, sprayed with WD40 type spray and refitted liners. Now need to get and fit some spring clips and screws for undertray etc. Removed and opened alarm siren unit, FUBARRED! Got replacement from E-bay, fitted today, leave overnight and see if that performs after charging.

Just used Autoglym soft top cleaner and protector (thrown in when I bought the car). Garaged car after wiping down, so let’s see what it’s like tomorrow. Bought a pack of undertray screws and nuts, rearmost nuts too big for holes in subframe. Too much aggro to try and file to size, will have to visit my local stealer. Undertray is a bit broken, but as 6 screws only fitted, am I surprised. Now fitted 13 out of 14 screws and a couple of tywraps and 4 holes to tie it together a bit better. Drivers door lock was loose, tried to get it sorted, ended up with no better AND now the handle doesn’t sit flush, 1 step forward and 3 back, Murphy’s Law strikes again! Front brakes now been cleaned and checked, improved braking response, looked at rears but no dismantling, due to “funny” bolt that manual says needs replacement if removed. Something else to look into - I’m glad I’ve got the time to do this now, but will have to take a couple of days off now, as the old body is aching after all this rummaging around on the floor. Fitted LED number plate lamps after OEM O/S unit “spring” broke, on removal to investigate rusting in this area. I use the car weekly on a 21 mile trip to my volunteer position with National Trust, I’m still impressed with this little rocket and getting more pleasure from exploring its potential, then I get in an electric boat that has a max speed of 4mph and 0-60 of 24 hours! But I love it, then get back in the TT, hood down, let the FUN begin.

Well pleased with results of Autoglym soft top cleaner and protector. Easy to follow instructions, straight forward to apply. Garaged overnight, and pleased with initial colour which seemed much darker. In shade whilst giving it a quick polish (as instructions said keep product off paint and windows, don’t know why at this point, but this was my knee jerk reaction) top now seems even better. My wife even noticed the difference. Will see how this goes with time.

A particular niggle that’s been present since purchased, has at last been fixed. Three of the interior air vents had Up/Down flaps that were not in line! Took them out yesterday and spent a frustrating couple of hours trying to sort them out. BIG sigh of relief, after all sorted and no trauma either, can now attend aitp satisfied! Off to refit vents, so hopefully not being presumptuous!

Yes, good to chat and pick your brains, have adopted one of your ideas already! Managed to remove all 4 nuts from rear spoiler bolts, applied a marine grade silicone to inside of boot area around the 4 bolts. Refitted all 4 nuts/washers and re-secured them all, having to use long nose pliers to hold the bolts that turned before being fully secured. Removed number plate lamps to assist with diagnosis later. It's now hissing with rain today, so will wait and see what results are awaiting me tomorrow - when it's fine weather, well, that's what the weather man/person says.

Finally sorted an issue with driver's door lock.... Since picking it up the driver's door needed two pulls on the handle to open (locked or unlocked). But as there were more important engine, transmission service needs, was put on back burner. Two weeks ago on shutting the door the lock barrel jumped out! After perusing the forum and manual, took door handle off, couldn't identify the collar that secures lock barrel in place, that's the cause of the problem. Request complete door handle from online breaker in correct colour, original handle only slightly better than spare, so quick polish up and started to refit the new handle. As I was pushing the door handle up into position a bright colour caught my eye in the rear window channel.......YES!...... the collar had been there all the time. Anyway fitted the replacement and all is grand.
Got all ready to change Haldex oil and filter couple days ago, got under car and my Hex bit seemed too small for the drain plug?? Checked manual for size, got correct size, Hmm, back under with various sizes - either too small or too big. Now getting cheesed off as this old body doesn't bend as easily as I remember, one last time, various methods tried to undo plug, all failed. Just as I went to get the hammer and chisel, SANITY prevailed, you aint got a spare one!! Off to dealer, internet down, do the order on that paper stuff, OH! we can't take payment at the moment - paperless office is just round the corner everyone said about 10 years ago, Ha! Anyway, just checked, bits in stock now, so off to collect, (another unplanned journey in my Silver Arrow that excites me, everytime I get in it)

Hallelujah! Haldex oil and filter changed. Tap, tap, tap with hammer and chisel got drain plug out and smaller than expected amount of oil came out! Checked replacement drain plug, all good! The more I looked and tried to get to the filter, the more I frightened myself. Got out from under the TT and phoned a friend who runs a small garage, any ideas? Never done that mate! Right! Go indoors and have a lovely dinner, nice cup of tea and relax....... Back underneath, filter OFF! Now spent about 20 minutes trying to get it out! AARGH! Quick chill pill and back under with pre oiled new filter, Bish, Bash, done. New oil pushed in and just a drop lost when putting drain plug in. Wipe off oil residue, off ramps and stands, quick road test and check for any leaks? All good, clear up garage, put tools away - Result!
I’d like to meet the designers for the Haldex area on the Mk1!!!

The day out to RAF Cosford meet was brilliant, on a number of fronts. Car ran faultlessly, longest trip to date and very impressed with comfort (hood up and down). Night time driving was pleasant, headlights good. As a Scot, the MPG was very, very satisfying at 34.8, with speeds of 70-80mph. Overnight stop at Wolverhampton Prermier Inn, breakfast (BIG), then off to look round my apprentice school from outside the fence, some things have changed, but some things brought out the old demons, but now put to rest. Very enjoyable day, chatting with owners of all ages and looking at TTs of all styles was very informative and enlightening, found out that my rear valance is from a V6 and rear shocks are mods (Gas-A-Just), can now open boot with remote (didn't know to press and hold). Ordered N279 valve (VCDS diagnostics fault confirmed) and number plate lamps, get them fitted once supplied. Grommet on N/S boot gutter for number plate lamps loom missing from purchase, dealer quoted £168 for replacement!!!!!! Oh! that did include the loom, can't justify that price though, will have to have a chat with a TT breaker in Thetford for options.
